Our first stop, after departing from Turin or Milan, is Stresa, a picturesque town on Lake Maggiore. It looks right out at the lake’s Borromean Islands and is an ideal place to start exploring the lake. After a stroll on the water front promenade, we will embark on a visit the Borromean Islands, starting from Isola Madre, the largest of the islands in the archipelago.
Here we will visit Palazzo Borromeo, built in 1500, rich in magnificent furnishings and beautiful rooms such as the Venetian lounge, decorated with floral paintings in trompe l’oeil style. There is also a chapel and a beautiful English garden with an incredible view of the lake.
On the western shores of Lake Maggiore, we visit the English style gardens of Villa Taranto, one of the most beautiful attractions of Piedmont. The garden manicured landscape is a real work of art with exotic plants, a water lily pond, and thousands of tulips, along with terraces and waterfalls.
The second island on our excursion is Fishermen’s Island, the smallest of the Borromean Islands and the only one with a year-round population – 32 hearty souls reside here along the cute cobbled streets and keep the fishing traditions alive. The island is a great place for seafood meal, with its smattering of restaurants on the water’s edge. Late afternoon return to your hotel.
