We leave Milan and cross the Venetian Plain, in half an hour we will be in Bergamo. The city is divided into two: Bergamo Alta (upper) a medieval city rich in history and and Bergamo Bassa (lower), the modern city that extends into the plain below, a thriving commercial centre.

Home to one of the busiest airport in Northern Italy, Bergamo, one of Lombardy’s four great historic cities, is an unmissable stop thanks to handsomely walled old town and contrasting modern elements. To reach Bergamo Alta we take a panoramic cable car that deposits us a few steps from the main square, Piazza Vecchia, the city’s salon. Piazza Vecchia is surrounded by the Palazzo della Ragione, the Campanone and the Palazzo del Podestà, which houses one of the most important libraries in Italy.

After a coffee, we can start to explore the city, getting lost in the medieval alleyways and squares of the city. Visit Bergamo’s Cathedral, the chapel of Pope John XXIII and its 52m high bell tower that offers spectacular views over the hills and surrounding plains. The city has a fascinating 18th century, an ancient wash-house, many antique shops and restaurants offering traditional Lombard cuisine and all accompanied by the music of Donizzetti, Bergamo’s great composer

We resume the journey to stop for a lunch in a winery in Franciacorta, the beautiful region located between the Lakes of Iseo and Garda where the fine and highly valued sparkling Franciacorta wines are produced.
