A day dedicated to the Strada dei Vini e dei Sapori (the road of wine and flavour) in the hills between Bologna and Modena, two rival but friendly cities that both lay claim to the invention of tortellini – something we’ll tell about during our visit.
The first attraction on our path is Monteveglio, an ancient village, that, in the past, was considered one of the most important strongholds in the area. On the hill where the city is located, the tower and the abbey stand tall on the summit, and bring to mind a long ago era of clashes and sieges. It’s an absolute gem that deserves to be visited.
Immediately after crossing the Panaro River, we come to Vignola, famous all over the world for its cherries. Besides its prized fruit, Vignola also has a beautiful and perfectly preserved fortress worthy of a visit (admission €10.00).
We are already in the lands of the “black gold”, the Traditional Balsamic Vinegar of Modena, a product that is intensely bound to the territory that produces it. Its long history, that reads more like a fairytale, has ancient origins that have been jealously handed down from father to son. Testimony to this history are the centuries old aging barrels still used in the vinegar’s production
We will get to discover the immense passion and learn of the simple gestures that lie behind this unique product. Traditional Balsamic Vinegar of Modena must be aged for least 12 years and should not be confused with the Balsamic Vinegar of Modena, the first is DOP and the other IGP (these are translated into English as POD: Protected Designation of Origin and PGI: Protected Geographical Indication).
During our day we will stop for lunch in a farm where you can taste the typical dishes of Modena. We will also sample the Balsamic Vinegar directly from the factory and pair it together with some of the fabulous local products.
We are close to Maranello and that means Ferrari, for fans a visit to the Ferrari Museum is not to be missed.
