Day Excursion to Subiaco and Rafting Experience

A day of complete relaxation on the outskirts of Rome, unspoiled nature, history, culture and an exciting experience that awakens the teenage soul that is in each of us.

Just a short distance east of Rome is the thousand-year-old town of Subiaco. Its name derives from Sublaceum (below the lake) and recalls the town’s position below the lakes next to which the Emperor Nero built a villa. Subiaco, on the edge of the Simbruini Mountains Regional Park, is the main town of the Aniene Valley and still preserves its medieval form. At the end of the 5th century, the young Benedetto da Norcia withdrew as a hermit into a cave in the area and founded the Benedictine order. From this ancient spiritual adventure, the Benedictine presence remains in Subiaco.

During the morning, we will visit the medieval centre of town and the Abbey Fortress that sits above it. The 11th Century stronghold, also known as Borgia’s Rock, was built to defend and keep watch. Thought to be the be the birthplace of Cesare (the original Machiavellian prince) and Lucrezia Borgia, it has been modified many times throughout its history, today’s tour will lead us through the magnificent halls that once hosted cardinals and popes.

We will stop in town for a lunch of local specialties before heading off to immerse ourselves in nature with an exciting rafting experience! The Aniene’s winding course, its crystal clear water and the enchanting setting make for a magical river descent. Join our local rafting expert who will guide the crew’s actions, coordinate, and govern the raft safely along river’s rapids.
